Naturalistic driving research methods are designed to measure how people actually use transportation systems in real-world conditions by fitting vehicles with small and unobtrusive sensors and data collectors that record natural driver performance in real time. This approach is very powerful in terms of providing accurate information to researchers on human driving behavior. Using this approach, VTTI has built a huge body of research and capabilities, housing more than 90 percent of naturalistic driving data in the world. An aerial view of the Virginia Smart Road.
