When actively flagging or monitoring a work zone, the work is not complete until you are home safe at the end of the day. It is important to stay aware of your surroundings to prevent yourself from slipping on wet surfaces, tripping over hazards, or falling into hidden, grass- covered low spots. Within the first year on the job, an employee’s risk of injury is greater than that of a seasoned employee. However, even seasoned employees can become complacent in their daily roles and responsibilities. Staying aware of your surroundings and scanning the work area is one way to help reduce your risk of injuries. For example, walking backward while talking to your partner on-site can cause you to slip on uneven surfaces and sustain a sprained ankle. SITUATIONAL AWARENESS AREAS OF INJURY Slips, Trips & Falls
