Flashing blue and red lights turn the dark December night into what looks like a Holiday illumination show. Giant steel plates line sections of the highway, protecting the underground utility lines from being crushed by the weight of the 30-foot-wide trailer. As a convoy of police, utility crews, and state highway officials carefully creep toward a new power plant, Flagger Force is controlling traffic along the route for our client, Roll Lift USA. It’s the task of Roll Lift to move this massive generator from the docks at Newburg, MD to the newly constructed power generation facility for CPV St. Charles Energy. It took John Rommel, Safety Advocate from the Baltimore Operations and Training Facility, and other members of the Quality and Safety department over 100 hours to put together plans for this particularly complex move. The planning hours consisted of detailed scouting up and down the route to coordinating safety and permissions with local utilities and municipalities. All this preparation facilitated the creation of a comprehensive traffic plan for Roll Lift USA and Maryland SHA to review and approve. This was not the first move where Flagger Force assisted Roll Lift. A previous eight mega moves occurred, starting in the summer of 2015. There were an equivalent number of hours spent on planning for those projects as well, but due to the extreme size and weight of this generator, additional resources were required. “This mega move was such an interesting one for us because of the sheer number of field crews it required,” said Rommel. “Over 30 individuals, from Advanced Crew Leaders (ACLs) to Crew Members (CM), were needed for this job. In total, this project consisted of over 70 people in addition to the Flagger Force team.” In addition to the Flagger Force field employees, Maryland State Troopers, Traffic Systems, Inc., Southern Maryland Electric No Problem for Flagger Force. The over million pound generator sits on two trailers in order to distribute the weight.
